Ophthalmology is a surgical specialty dealing with the prevention , diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.The department focuses on evaluating and providing the necessary treatment to the patients with utmost care . Our department is well equipped with the latest facilities enabling us to give the best possible patient care.

Our department is headed by Professor Dr J Antony, who has more than 30 years of experience in practice and teaching in Ophthalmology.Our second professor Dr K Mahadevan is a renowned and experienced Vitreo Retinal surgeon .In addition we have two associate professors, one assistant professor , two senior residents and 8 junior residents.

OPD care from 8 am to 4 pm.
We have 6 examination rooms, refraction room,dark room and a minor procedure room in the OPD. There is a clinical demonstration and seminar room for the students near the OPD.
We have 30 beds under IP care with round the clock duty doctor/senior resident and junior residents to monitor patients. A side lab and a clinical demonstration room are there near the ward.

V. Our department is actively involved in community based health care through regular eye camps and health education classes.
Under graduate training
Under graduate students are posted in the OPD during their 4th semester (4 weeks ) and 7th semester(6 weeks). They have regular seminar presentations and case discussions. At the end of their posting they are assessed by end posting theory and practical examinations.They maintain a log book. Theory classes are taken in the lecture halls. We have two clinical demonstration and seminar rooms with LCD, OHP and black board in our department.
Post graduate training
We have one MS and two DO students each year.Post graduate students have regular case discussions,seminar presentations, group discussions and journal clubs.They have monthly faculty class and guest lecture.In the final year, MS students are posted in neurology for two weeks.Theory examinations (Internal) and practical examinations are conducted at the end of the course.
Curriculum committee meeting is conducted every month chaired by the HOD. External experts are invited to give their valuable suggestions every 6 months.
Curriculum committee meeting of the department of ophthalmology involving the external experts was conducted on 24/09/2016.The curriculum for UG &PG was presented and the committee members actively participated in giving valuable suggestions. PG ‘s presented journals & research works. A member from MEU gave a brief description of the latest teaching methodologies.
Second curriculum committee meeting involving external experts was held on 22/7/2017. The revised curriculum for UGs and PGs were discussed . Changes made according to the suggestions by the experts in the previous meeting were Â presented. PGs presented Â the current status of their research work and journals. Suggestions were given by the external experts and the faculty from MEU. It was attended by Dr Sahasranamam (Director ,RIO), Dr Sheeba C.S (Supdt RIO), Dr Chandramohan(Clical Dean), Dr Geetha O (Co-ordinator MEU) and all the faculty and PGs from our department
REPORT ON CME OPHTHALMOLOGY â€“ 2019
Third annual CME of Dept. Of Ophthalmology was conducted on 10/03/19 at Lecture theatre, Sree Gokulam Medical College & Research Foundation.
CME was inaugurated by Dr.Meena Chakrabarti, KSOS vice president, in presence of Dean Dr.P Chandramohan, Principal Dr.R.Dayananda Babu, Dept HOD Dr.J.Antony & Dr.K.Mahadevan. Proceedings of the topics covered in CME in the form of a book was released by Dean during the inaugural function.
Scientific sessions were conducted betweenÂ 9:00 am and 3:40 pm. Fourteen papers covering various fields in ophthalmology including recent developments were presented and discussed by well known faculty from various institutions, chairpersons and delegates. 85 delegates from various institutions registered and attended the CME
