Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives’

ph1Department of Psychiatry, SGMC & Department Mental Health Nursing, celebrated suicide prevention day on September 10, 2015.Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives’ is the theme of the 2015. According to the recently released World Health Organization (WHO) report: Preventing Suicide: A Global Imperative, over 800,000 people die by suicide across the world each year. This alarming figure serves as a call for action to individuals and organizations to prevent suicide. This year, the theme encourages all the individuals to consider the role that offering support may play a major role in combating suicide. Considering the theme of 2015 for providing support to the individuals who are in need empowerment of the community and health care providers regarding suicide prevention is essential. With regard to this a class was organized for the medical and nursing students on importance of suicide prevention by Dr. Subha, HOD, Department of Psychiatry. The class was about the epidemiology, current statistics and action plan for the prevention of suicide.


A poster presentation and public awareness class was organized by the students. The class for the public was about the common myth regarding suicide, causes or risk factors of suicide, identification of suicide risk, how to prevent suicide.


An awareness class on Identification and prevention of suicide for NSS volunteers of Govt. HSS Venjaramoodu was taken by Dr. Ammu, consultant psychiatrist, Sree Gokulam Medical College & Research Foundation & Mr. Praveen C Thulasi, Lecturer, Sree Gokulam Nursing College. Awareness class was quite interesting with the contribution from those who were attending the class. The session was concluded with an oath taking to join hands in preventing suicide.
